SERV: War of 1812. Richard Crosby Act of 1855 #108,848 Rejected. Private sub for James Nutwell Service Md. Mil Col. S.C. Watkins, Capt. Franklin. Letter from Robert S.D. Jones, Esq inquiring regarding applications of Richard Trott, Richd L. Crosby, William Stallings and others. April 26 1855. Received Warrant 210825 40 acres. enl Jul 1813 dis ec 1814. Rich. Crosby served in Simmons Comp from 22 Aug to 17th Oct 1814 not Tillard's rolls. Warrant 21, 082 issued and sent Oct 6 1851. Friendship Md Mar 29 1856 letter says your letter of 17th instant which you say that Richard Crosby was reported as confined for desertion and therefore claim rejected was received and I am not aware as Mr. Crosby was allowed a warrant for 40 acres of land under the act of 1850 I presume he served at least 14 days does the record show the time he is charged with. There must be some mistake and he obtained 40 acres already and perhaps he was mistaken in the name of the captain. Richard alleges he rendered in Capt. Franklin Comp, MD Mil as the auditor reports no on the roll of Capt. Jacob Franklin. Richard L. Crosby age 72 of Calvert Co MD declares he was a private in Capt. Frankklin 2nd Regt of MD Mil commanded by Saml C. Watkins for the term of 6 months and received 40 acres. His mark. Richard Crosby a private in Capt. Thomas S. Simmons Co MD Mil served from 23 Aug 1814 (time indef) on rolls extending from 18 Oct 1814 to 1 Dec when comp was discharged. He is reported confined for desertion. He receipts from 23 Aug 1814 to 27 Sep 1814. He does note receipts from 28 Sep 1814 to 1 Dec 1814. No substitute mentioned on the rolls. James Nutwell a private served in Capt. Jacob Franklin's Co MD from 9 to 10 July 1814, 18 to 22 Jun 1814, 26 to 28 Jun 1814, 10 to 14 Jun 1814, 13 to 14 Jul 1814, one day in April 1814 and 20 days in 1813. No substitute mentioned on rolls. Richard Crosby not on Captain Jacob Franklins rolls. Cep 3 Sep 1851 erroneous. Re-examined Feb 20 1856. Sep 11 1851 entitled to 160 acres in Capt. Simmons Comp from 22 Aug till the 17th Oct 1814 and that his name is not found on the rolls of Capt. Tillards Comp. which only entitles you to 40 acres since you have furnished no discharge, other evidence, etc. Anne Arundel Co on 26th Nov 1850 Richard Crosby age 67 years a resident of Anne Arundel Co in the state of MD sworn that he is individual who was a private in the Comp of Capt. William Tillard in the 2nd Regt of MD commanded by Col. Samuel C. Watkins that he volunteered at Tracy's landing about Jul 1 1813 for the term of 16 months and was honorably discharged at Baltimore on first of Dec 1814 he went to Baltimore as a substitute for one James Nutwell a private who was drafted for six months in the Comp commanded by Capt. Thomas T. Simmes and was in the Battle of Baltimore. went as a substitute first July 1814 to Baltimore discharged in Baltimore 1 Jul 1814 and that he received no cert. or discharge.
