Iona Helen Tschakert, the daughter of Joseph and Anne (Endres) Strohfus, was born on June 26, 1917, on a farm near Grover, South Dakota. She obtained her teaching degree from Notre Dame School in Mitchell, South Dakota. She taught school at Gill School near Florence. Iona was united in marriage with Clarence M. Tschakert on November 15, 1941 in Henry, South Dakota. The couple farmed near Florence. Iona and Clarence were married for 64 years before Clarence passed away on October 19, 2006.
Iona was an extension member for many years and in 1999 received the "Heart of the Homemaker" award. She was the first to receive this award. Iona was known for her cooking and sewing exhibits, winning many ribbons and trophies at the Winter Farm Show. She was a 4-H leader for many years, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She also served on the Florence School Board and the Lake Area Multi District Board.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; three brothers, Martin, Robert and Leonard; four sisters, Berniece, Lucille, Marceline and Ramona; a son in-law, John Wagner; and a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Tschakert.
Iona is survived by five daughters, JoAnn (Ed) Wegner, Carol Tschakert, Ardelle (Doug) Fosheim, Jeanette (Robert) Mack and Darlene Wagner; four sons, Lyle (Bette) Tschakert, Frank (Sheila) Tschakert, Delbert (Kay) Tschakert and LaVerne Tschakert; her brother, Marvin; and her sister, Laurene (Loren) Thoreson; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; also a niece, Janice Koslowski-Dickhaut, whom Clarence and Iona had raised since a small child.
