United States Marine Corps General. He was the Marine Corps Commandant from January 1,1972 until June 30,1975. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1935 and was commissioned in the Marine Corps. He was the commanding officer of the Marines on board the USS Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor when the ship was attacked on December 7,1941. During World War II, he commanded the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division during the battle of Bougainville in the Pacific. In 1944 he earned the Navy Cross for his actions at Fonte Hill on Guam. He saw combat on Iwo Jima in 1945. He was the Commanding General, III Marine Amphibious Force in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1969 until 1972 when he then became the Twenty-fifth Commandant of the Marines. He retired on June 30,1975.
