SUSSEX - Arlea H. Gallagher, 68, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012, at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton.
Born in Dornsife, Pa., Dec. 12, 1943, to the late William and Sadie Howerter, Mrs. Gallagher was a graduate of Lock Haven State College and Montclair State University. She was a physical education teacher in Rockaway Township and later at Franklin High School, where she coached several sports.
In 1973, she gave birth to twins and became a stay-at-home mom. Mrs. Gallagher was the first woman in Sussex County to become a certified softball official for high school. She was a swimming instructor, a lifeguard trainer and a recreational golfer. She also coached girls' softball in the Sussex-Wantage Recreational Program.
She and her husband of 41 years, Bernard, founded the Sussex Bike Shop.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard; her daughter, Deanna and her husband, Steven Evanego; her son, Michael and his wife, Kimberley, and their children, Samuel and Maxwell; her brother, Mark Howerter and his wife, Connie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may pay their respects to the family Saturday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank St. (Route 23), Sussex. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Private cremation services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Arlea Gallagher's name to the Karen Ann Quinlan Center of Hope Hospice, 99 Sparta Ave., Newton, N.J. 07860; or to the Compassionate Care Hospice, 350 Sparta Ave., Bldg B, Suite 2, Sparta, N.J. 07871.
