Killed in Action in 1944 at Leyte, Phillipines, the soldier's remains were repatriated for reburial. This obituary is from The Oregonian, 10 May 1949:
"CARNEY, 1st Lt. Gordon L., Leyte, 1944; son of Byron G. Carney, Milwaukie; brother of Wendell H. (Carney), Longview, Wash.; Mrs. Verne Boon, Salem; Mrs Verne Denlis, Reno, Nev.; Mrs. Carl L. Picotte, Irvington, Cal.; Mrs. James Phillips, El Cajon, Cal. Friends invited to join procession leaving Peake Funeral Home, Milwaukie, Wed at 130 pm or go directly to Lincoln Memorial Park, where graveside services will be held at 2 pm. VFW Rex Appleby post No. 1557 participating."
