Obituary The Independent Record:

Grace M. Babcock, age 94, passed away peacefully from her life here to her heavenly home on Sept. 11, 2004, at the Country Living Home where she had resided since May of this year.

Grace was born in Deer Lodge to Walter and Grace (Brown) Horne on July 29, 1910. She was raised in a loving family with two sisters and six brothers.

In 1918, the family moved from Deer Lodge to their ranch in the Canton Valley near Townsend. Grace graduated from Broadwater County High School and married Carter Babcock in January of 1930. They were blessed with two daughters, Marilyn and Joyce. In 1941, the family moved to Helena.

Grace worked several jobs before starting to work for Galusha, Higgins and Galusha. When she retired from Galusha in 1976 at the age of 65 she worked as a front desk receptionist at St. Peter's Hospital for several years. In 1980 she started work for the State of Montana where she continued to work full-time until her 89th year. The last year she worked she was the oldest full-time employee of the state of Montana. On a vacation in Washington, D.C., she was awarded a citation from Conrad Burns which had been read into the Congressional Record honoring her for her longevity of employment.

Grace is survived by her daughters Marilyn Bracken of Helena and Joyce (Jim) Kraut of Mariposa, Calif.; her sister Helen (Delbert) Herron of Great Falls; brother Jack Horne of Helena; grandsons Doug (Sharon) Bracken and Jeff Bracken, both of Helena, Marc Bracken of Billings, Todd (Satomi) of Yokohama, Japan, Dennis (Lisa) Kraut and Steven (Kathy) Kraut all of Modesto, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren: Tyler Bracken of Helena, Shiina and Nicholas Bracken of Yokohama, Japan, Jennifer, Josh, Jessica and Justin, Cody and Cory Kraut, all of Modesto. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by her husband Carter in 1970, her grandsons, Victor Kraut and Greg Bracken, her son-in-law Wilbur Bracken, her parents, her sister Bessie and brothers Warren, LeRoy, Wesley, William and Charles Horne.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Harper presiding. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family request memorials in Grace's name to the National MS Society, Montana Division P.O. Box 30936, Billings, MT 59107-0936.
