James Patrick Stefflre, son of Patrick and Elizabeth (Taylor), was born April 2, 1946, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, and died unexpectedly on December 12, 2005.

Throughout his high school years, Jim was a star football and basketball player. Jim attended UCLA on a full football scholarship and transferred to UC Riverside to continue playing football as well as rugby. After earning his undergraduate degree, Jim pursued a master's degree in psychology from UNR. While there, he joined the Nevada Air National Guard fulfilling his dreams of becoming a pilot. After graduation, Jim attended McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. Though Jim's law career earned him a position at the law firm of McDonald Carano Wilson LLP, he was always a pilot at heart and retired from law in 1998.

A 32-year member of the Nevada Air National Guard, Jim enlisted in 1968 and earned his wings in 1972 from Columbus Air force Base, Mississippi. Throughout his pilot career with the unit, he served in various positions including squadron commander and Headquarters Director of Operations, retiring in 2001 as a "full bird" Colonel.

While serving during Desert Storm, Jim was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry in the line of duty. He was also awarded the Air Medal, AF Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal, AF Achievement Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and Order of Nevada. Jim's carefree attitude carried a serious side when it came to flying. Although a lawyer by profession, flying was his true passion. He flew for PanAm Airway, Atlas Airways and most recently, FedEx Airways. Throughout his life of adventure and travel, Jim touched many lives with his sense of humor, kindness and generosity (thus the nickname "Diamond Jim"). He was a friend and mentor who could be called at any hour for any reason.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Sharon and her children Brad, Jeff, and Jen; his beautiful sister, Gerry McGahey, her husband Larry and his nephew Troy. He leaves behind many dear friends from all walks of life. His laughter and passion for life will be greatly missed.

Services for Jim will be held at the Nevada Air National Guard auditorium on Monday, December 19, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make your donations to the Nevada Air National Guard's Children's Christmas Party at 1775 National Guard Way, Reno, NV 89502 and St. Vincent's Programs at P.O. Box 5099, Reno, NV 89513.
