JACK RATLEY, 82, of Carnesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
Born in Newton, AL, he graduated from Bainbridge High School, attended South Georgia Teacher's College in Statesboro on a baseball scholarship, and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education and Education Administration from the University of Georgia.
*He came to Carnesville in 1937 and until his retirement in 1977, served as teacher, baseball and basketball coach, and principal of the old Franklin County High School and later Carnesville Elementary School. In 21 years as basketball coach, his teams won 352 games, won 4 district championships, and had 2 undefeated teams.
He served as president of regional Georgia Education Association, president of the Principal's Association, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia High School Association, was a Life member of PTA, and the local and state retired teacher's associations.
He was a charter member of the Carnesville Lions Club and he was a Mason. He was a member of the Carnesville United Methodist Church, where he served as a steward, chairman of the board of stewards, and as Sunday School superintendent for 3 decades.
Surviving as a son, David Ratley of Macon; 2 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.
He was the widower of Mildred Sanders Ratley and a son of the late Wattice Ralph and Julia Lee Ratley.
Services were at the Carnesville United Methodist Church with Rev. Rebecca Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery.
