OBITUARY: Father Gormley Dead. Popular Young Priest, Formerly
Assistant at St. Mary's. Word was received here today of the death of the Rev. Thomas Gormley, formerly assistant rector of St. Mary's church of this city, which occured yesterday at his home in St. Columban, Perth County, Ontario, the sad news causing deep sorrow among the many friends and admirers of the young priest in Lafayette. Father Gormley, while he was at St. Mary's but six months, made a host of friends in Layfayette and was held in the highest esteem. He was born thirty two years ago in the town in which he died and received his classical education at Toronto, Canada. For a number of years he taught school and then he entered the ministry. He came to the United States and secured his theological education at Mt. St. Mary's of the West at Cincinnati, O. He was ordained a priest in June, 1910, and was sent to Lafayette to be assistant at St. Mary's this being his first charge. He was a valuable assistant to the Very Rev. John R. Dinnen, rector of the church, and soon endeared himself to all members of the congregation. He was never robust and at the time of his coming here he was far from well. Late in December 1910, he was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital and remained
there for nearly four months. He was afflicted with tuberculosis, but in spite of the affliction he retained his cheerfulness and youthful enthusiasm. During his stay at the hospital he made many new friends and by everybody who came in contact with him he was regarded as a genial and loveable companion. Father Gormley was then taken home and gradually grew weaker until the end came. He is survived by his mother and five brothers. Father Gormley was a brilliant scholar and had a bright future in store for him in the service of the church. He will be buried Wednesday at St. Columban and solemn requiem high mass will be held at St. Mary's in this city at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning for Father Gormley, the Very Rev. John R. Dinnen officiating. Bishop Alerding probably will attend the funeral at St. Columban.
