Helen Sharp, Rockton, died yesterday shortly after 3 o'clock at the Camp Rotary swimming pool, five miles southeast of Rockford. She was attending a picnic for senior nurses and staff doctors of St. Anthony's hospital in Rockford. She had taken several dives and was resting on the edge of the pool, when she collapsed and fell in. Her unconscious body was dragged from the pool and the Rockton fire department inhalator squad called. By the time the inhalator arrived, Mrs. Conklin was on her way to the hospital. Doctors at St. Anthony's worked for a long time, to no avail.
A post mortem exam conducted this morning revealed that Mrs. Conklin died as a result of a heart attack, possibly brought on by over-exertion, according to a report by Coroner David Klontz.
She was born Aug. 23, 1924. She attended Hononegah High School and was a member of the 1945 class at St. Anthony's. Her senior nurse's training would have completed in another month.
She is survived by her husband, Willard S. Conklin, Rockton, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sharp, a brother Edward Sharp, Jr., all of Shirland; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sharp, Shirland, maternal grandmother Mrs. Mildred Spafford, Rockford; an aunt Mildred Sharp, Rockford; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sharp, Shirland; an uncle Allie Sharp, Shirland; and an aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Spafford, Toledo, O.
The funeral will be held at the Shirland church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Rockton cemetery.
