Harriet Bemis was born on January 14, 1866 in Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan to Albert F. Bemis and Margaret Whittington.

The mother, Margaret, died when Hattie was one and a half years old from complications from the birth of sister Ada.

The father, Albert, remarried to Amy Jane Fletcher and Hattie lived with her maternal grandparents George and Mary Whittington for some time.

Hattie, at the age of 17, married Charles J. Post on February 02, 1883 in Pentwater. The two had one child: Eva May Post. Hattie and Charles divorced in 1886.

Hattie secondly married Edward Simmons on August 21, 1887 in Oceana County, Michigan.
