Bob Johnson was born July 12, 1921, to Joseph E. Johnson and Emma Schreiber Johnson in the Highland area of Moline. After his mother passed away at an early age, his aunt, Marta and Culley Carlson helped his father to raise Bob and his sister, Dorothy.
He graduated from Moline High School in 1940 and graduated with a tool and die apprenticeship from Reynolds Engineering Company. Bob was a World War II veteran and trained in the U.S. Army Cadet Corp as an aviator and paratrooper. Bob was extremely proud of his experience as an Army Cadet and, like other veterans, shared great pride in this country. Bob worked for John Deere in manufacturing and managerial positions throughout his career. He traveled extensively for Deere developing and setting up manufacturing operations throughout Europe and North America. He developed long-term friendships in many countries that he visited and always came home with many stories and proud memories, which he loved to share. He served on numerous organizations in the Quad-Cities and was chairman of the local Society of Manufacturing Engineers (S.M.E.).
Bob was an avid golfer and played regularly with his friends within the Quad-Cities, oftentimes competing in local tournaments. His greatest satisfaction was teaching his grandchildren the game of golf and watching them become very competitive within the game. Upon retirement, Bob ventured to his son's house in Southern California to spend the winters, where he was able to continue playing golf, even to the age of 90. Bob always enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, sharing stories, eating out and exercising. He was remarkably active throughout his life, going to the Moline YMCA to exercise several times per week. He was also an active member of the Moline Viking Club. During his last visit to Southern California, he enrolled in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Mission Hospital to focus on improving his strength and endurance. He was so proud of the honor of being the oldest member of his class to graduate from the program at the age of 89.
Survivors include children, Jolene (Duane) Clarkson, Orion, Edwin (Linda) Johnson, Aliso Viejo, Calif.; son-in-law, Dan Adams; grandchildren, Robert (Allison) Adams, Norwalk, Iowa, Danielle Adams, Los Angeles, Calif., David and Anna Adams, Iowa City, Iowa, Thomas Johnson, Aliso Viejo, Danielle (Warren) Lumsden and children, Bothell, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Lulich Johnson of 60 years; daughter, Marianne Adams; and sister, Dorothy Meyer.
