Composer, Producer. Best known for his writing partnership with Jerry Ross which yielded several notable Broadway scores. Born in New York City, the son of a concert pianist, he had no interest in classical music and attended the University of North Carolina, where he studied Writing. Following serving with the US Navy during World War II, he landed a position with an advertising firm and on the side, he composed music. During the early 1950s, he met Jerry Ross and initiated their short-lived but fruitful pairing with the song "Rags to Riches", which was recorded by and became a major hit for Tony Bennett. They launched their Broadway association with "John Murray Anderson's Almanac" (1953 to 1954) and followed this with perhaps their best known work. They received Tony Awards for their efforts to the productions "The Pajama Game" (1954 to 1956, "Hey There", "Hernando's Hideaway" and "Steam Heat") and "Damn Yankees" (1955 to 1957, "Heart", "Whatever Lola Wants"). Following Ross' sudden death in 1955 from chronic bronchitis, Adler carried on (with lesser success) and added producer to his resume with "The Sin of Pat Muldoon" (1957) and received a Tony Award nomination with "Kwamina" (1961). Adler was also noteworthy for producing the staged presidential birthday celebration for John F. Kennedy in 1962, which saw Marilyn Monroe sing her famous "Happy Birthday" song. He later composed the Pulitzer Prize nominated symphonic works "Retrospectrum" (1979), "Yellowstone Overture" (1980) and "Wilderness Suite" (1983). He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984. Adler was formerly married to British actress Sally Ann Howes. (bio by: C.S.)
