Joseph G. Mundy, 95, Westinghouse Machinist during W.W. II Joseph G. Mundy, a long-time resident of Collingdale, PA, died October 25, 2012 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
He was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the oldest of 13 children born to Italian immigrant parents, Dominic and Antionette Mundy. At age 21 he married Esther C. Simmons and in 1939 they moved to Glenolden, PA where he was hired as a machinist at Westinghouse Electric Co. in Lester, PA. He quickly became one of the company's most productive lathe operators.
During World War II, Westinghouse held several ship building contracts with the U.S. Navy and sent a letter to the selective service board requesting draft deferments for their most vital employees, including Mr. Mundy. His deferment was granted and he continued to work there until 1950. In 1951 he opened Mundy's Sporting Goods store in the front of his home at 1008 MacDade Boulevard in Collingdale, PA. He sold primarily hunting and fishing equipment, including guns and rifles.
He also repaired and sold lawn mowers and bicycles. Mr. Mundy invented the prismatic borescope, a small handheld device used to inspect the bore of a rifle. He sold tens of thousands of them to dealers and customers for 30 years. The store, now known as Suburban Armory is still open under new management. In 1954 he expanded his business to contracted machining work, primarily for Westinghouse.
This business grew steadily and in 1968 he built the fully equipped Mundy Machine Shop located on MacDade Boulevard in Collingdale, just a few blocks from his home. His two sons still run the business today. Mr. Mundy was an avid fisherman and hunter who made several trips to Wyoming to hunt deer and antelope.
In their mid-50's he and his wife became snow skiing enthusiasts. They spent many winters in Aspen, Colorado, skiing and socializing with friends they met there. Mr. Mundy loved music and was an accomplished violinist who played for personal enjoyment and enjoyed entertaining friends and family. His wife Esther died in 1987 at age 65. Survivors: 4 children Gerald Bruce (Linda) Mundy of Honeybrook, PA, Beverly (Edwin) Hunter of Media, PA, Byron (Mary Beth) Mundy of Collingdale, PA and Karen (Thomas) Flynn of Voorhees, NJ.; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters Margaret (David) Hafter and Elizabeth (Robert) Zaleppa, both of Syracuse, NY; his brother John Mondy of Syracuse, NY and a dear companion Natalia Volkova.
Viewing: Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Friday November 2, 2012 9:30 AM O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. pringfield Road, Springfield, PA 19064. Funeral Service at 11AM. Interment SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
