|Birth: ||1758, Ireland|
New York, USA
Birth year calculated from age of James shown on immigration records.
EMMIGRATION records tell the story of the James and Martha Morrison and their large family leaving Northern Ireland and coming to America. Vessel "William & John" Port of embarkation: Londonderry, date of arr. in US Jul 10, 1824, Entry #366: James Morrison 66 farmer; Martha Morrison 50, wife to do; Isabella Morrison 23 spinster; Jane Morrison 22 spinster; John Morrison 21 farmer; David Morrison 19 farmer; James 17 farmer; Thomas 15 farmer; Nancy 12 child; Eleanor 11 child; Martha 9 child; Joseph 7 child. The port of arrival was New York City.
So where exactly was this couple from in Northern Ireland? A birth record for daughter Eleanor was found in the Parish of Tamlaght Finlagan in County Londonderry. Presbyterian Church records of Ballykelly MIC/1P/208/4, Ballykelly Presbyterian Church, Co. Londonderry, Page 14: James Morison of Broharris, (a townland--see photo at top right) a daughter, born Nov 6 baptised Nov 9, 1811. This matches the emigration and death records I have on Eleanor. So we know that James and Martha lived in that townland and parish at one time. It is the only record of any of their children that has been found. As to where James and Martha were born, no record has been found.
The Morrison family settled in New York City after their arrival in 1824. In 1832, some of the children migrated to Commerce Township, Oakland County, Michigan, with their families. This split up the Morrison Family. Records have been found in Green-Wood Cemetery that show that most of those that stayed in New York are buried there, a number of them in the same plots. (Research by Barbara McClelland Lewis, ggggrandaughter of James and Martha Morrison.)

Note: James and Martha are resting in Lot 16520, which was purchased Apr 11, 1866 by son Joseph Morrison, but a Green-Wood administrator informed me that those buried in this plot were removed from another location in NYC. So death dates are unknown.
