Harold Huston Buckner of Selah, Wash., died Sunday. He was 84.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Terrebonne Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Buckner was born May 3, 1918, in Salem to Howard and Augusta Buckner. He grew up in Lone Pine. He married Lela Gerke in 1943.
He served in the Navy during World War II and survived the sinking of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Block Island in 1944. Mr. Buckner was honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Buckner co-owned a farm equipment dealership. He then became a rancher as the owner of Grassy Butte Cattle Company and High Gorge Training Stables, both in Lone Pine. He was a professional horseman and active in horse racing in the Northwest.
He was affiliated with the American Quarter Horse Association, the Oregon Racing Quarter Horse Association and the Thoroughbred Association. He won both the Quarter Horse Derby and the Thoroughbred Derby on April 21, 1994, at Portland Meadows.
Survivors include his companion Dorathy White; one son, Donald; one brother, Waneard of Terrebonne; one sister, Leola Schrunk of Burns; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, his parents and a brother.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Yakima Regional Cancer Care Center.
Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home in Yakima, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
