Richard P. "Dick" Hammel, 73, 970 Ray St., died at 3:40 p.m. Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Hammel began working at Hammel's Home Appliance Shop in 1949 and became owner of the business in 1957. He also operated an antique bicycle tire dealership in Huntington. He was a member of the Wheelman Club, Antique Telephone Collectors Association, Model T Ford Club, and Antique Automobile Club of America. He was a member of the Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival steering committee, serving as chairman of the antique vehicles exhibit, and was the recipient of the festival's Arrowhead Award in 1995.
He was a member of Emmanuel Community Church, Fort Wayne, and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.
He was born Dec. 11, 1926, in Huntington, a son of Audry and Ferne Wiles Hammel. He married Arlene R. Funk on Nov. 17, 1945, in Biloxi, Miss. She survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Terry Lee Hammel of Fort Wayne and Rodney Hammel of Roanoke; a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Brenda) Rittenhouse, Huntington; three brothers, Mark Hammel of Huntington, Harold Hammel of Elletsville, and Jerald Hammel of Columbia City; a sister, Evalyn Wohlford, Huntington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Crystal Ann Hammel and Lynette Ann Hammel.
Calling is from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, and 10-11 a.m. Friday at Emmanuel Community Chruch, Fort Wayne.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with Pastor Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice, in care of Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.
