Edward W. Free
MANCHESTER - Edward W. Free, 77, of Manchester, died at 11:40 a.m. Thursday at his home, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Lois L. (Wagner) Free. The couple observed their 52nd wedding anniversary March 4.
The service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Home Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, with military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewing will be 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Free was born March 27, 1917, in Red Lion. He was the son of the late Harry and Mary E. (Gohn) Free.
He retired in August of 1974 from the former Lucking Brothers Trucking Co. of York, where he was a construction engineer and crane operator.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local Union 542.
He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars West York Post 8951, the Sons of the American Legion Post in Maine and the 13th Ward Political Club, York.
Mr. Free also is survived by two sons, Edward L. Free of Odessa, Fla., and Morris J. Free of Manchester; a daughter, Diana D. McCall of Springvale, Maine; seven grandchildren; a brother, Morris O. Free of Railroad, Ga.; and three sisters, Etta Clarkson of Dallastown, Oda Reimold of Manchester, and Peg Conway of York.
