Sgt. James H. Favre - Companies A, H & K, Fifth Regiment Kentucky Cavalry Volunteer - Union

Joined for Duty September 27, 1861 in Lebanon, Kentucky at the age of 19. He mustered in with Company A, March 24, 1862 in Nashville, Tennessee. His horse was listed as 'Absent'- left lame in Columbia, Ky.

Private Favre was reported absent without authority from Dec. 15, 1862 till shown present April 13, 1863. He is shown as 3rd Sgt. Company H, April 15, 1863 and being on detached duty at Regimental HQ as clerk. On May 1st, 1863 he transferred to Company K and on May 28 is appointed regimental Sergeant Major. On August 3rd he is reduced in rank to Private.

He is then reported 'Confined in Nashville Penitentiary since December 23rd, 1863 for theft. He was released June 20th, 1864 'without trial'. On September 19, 1864 made Sergeant again. He was 'Captured by the enemy, October 26, 1864 at Stilesboro, Georgia.

He was confined at the Cahaba, Alabama Prisoner of War camp on November 13, 1864. Paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 21, 1865. It was noted that he was on the list of men who 'expressed a willingness to be paroled to go to work for the CSA"

Considering his 'up-down-up-down' military career, fate had one last terrible trick to play when it placed him on the riverboat Sultana on April 27, 1865 when it exploded with great loss of life. His body, if recovered was not identified, his place of burial if it existed, is unknown. Many of the unknown dead of the Sultana are buried in the Memphis National Cemetery.

I have not been able to find much personal information on him or his family. His mother 'Flora' filed for a pension on May 18, 1880 - Application 265.447 and Certificate of Pension 268.250 was given. Copies of the application are available at the National Archives.

The following is not proven:

One last thing...which may explain his absence from December 15, 1862 to April of 1863. There is a record of a James H. Favre marrying a Mary Adalaid Johnson in Sumner County, Tenn. on January 18, 1863. I cannot verify this to be the same James H. Favre. Mary A Favre was listed in the Nashville, Tenn. city directory as widow of James H. Favre -Records beginning in 1886 and ending in 1910. For much of this time she is shown living with a Miss Alice Favre - possibly a sister of James H. Mary died January 9, 1910. Her Death Certificate states she is buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Nashville. Her parents were Nelson Johnson and Mildred 'Mabery' Johnson.
