| Birth: | Aug. 20, 1909 Henstridge Somerset, England | | Death: | Sep. 4, 1997 Canberra Australian Capital Territory, Australia | Gladys was the daughter of William Harry Hill, a timber feller of Syamall, Somerset, and his wife, Lily Ryall Crofts Hill, the widow of Walter Hallet Crofts. Gladys had two half-sisters and two brothers.
She was married twice. She wed Henry Rowland Jeffs in 1934, but it was an unhappy marriage. They adopted a son. The couple divorced in the early 1940s.
Gladys married Samuel William Martin in 1958, and they built a strong and loving marriage. Her son took Sam's surname.
She lived all her life in Somerset until migrating to Australia in the early 1970s to be with her son's family. Thereafter she resided in Canberra, living first with her son, then in her own apartment. From the mid-1980s she lived in the Canberra Masonic Homes in Pearce, ACT, before moving into the Salvation Army Mountain View Aged Care Facility in Narrabundah, ACT.
Gladys was a domestic servant before her marriage and a devoted housewife after it.
She loved watching international test cricket on the telly and would always barrack for Australia over her native England every time.
Gladys also enjoyed knitting and made many beautiful items for her great-grandson. She was thrilled when a great-granddaughter came into the family after three generations of boys.
She loved home-made pumpkin soup and apple sauce.
Gladys was a very kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she made some good friends in Australia. She is very much missed. Family links: Spouse: Samuel William Martin (1913 - 1972)
