The Chesleys did not become Custer County pioneer residents until 1889. Charles H. and Phoebe Ward Chesley were married 13 Aug 1848 in Plattsburg, New York, where they had grown up and here their first four were born, George, Candis, Charles E. and Ida. With one nursing baby and three toddlers the couple traveled by wagon train to Morrison, Illinois the summer of 1857. One year later twins Catie (Eva) and Carrie was born (Carrie died at three months), Cyrus and Lucy were born here.
Charles, a farmer, when age 36, served one year in the Civil War and was discharged at Benton Barracks, Missouri in 1865.
In 1870, (oldest son, George was 21 and youngest girl Lucy May was 4)the family emigrated to homestead near Osborn City, Kansas. Records shows the same family and friends names migrating from NY to IL to KS and to Powell Canyon in Custer County, NE. The same records show all five Chesley young people married in KS with in three years except Candis, who was a victim of Downs Syndrome and who lived and moved with loving parents until she died at age 44 in the Powell Canyon home.
