Age 17 years enlisted at St. Paul, February 20, 1864 mustered in as Musician with Co. D. 1st Minnesota Infantry Transferred to Co. B. March 1, 1864 captured on June 22, 1864, at the Battle of Petersburg and sent to Andersonville Prison.

He was a farmer from Rosemount, MN, just south and west of Fort Snelling. Enlisted as a private (date unknown) at age 17 and on 2/20/1864 was mustered into Co. D, 1st Minnesota Infantry.
The "Old First" was being mustered out and efforts were being made to reenlist enough of the veterans to allow the unit's name to be continued on. However, there were not enough men left who were willing to sign up so the unit got a new name: the 1st Minnesota Battalion. George was re-mustered into Company B of the First Battalion on 3/1/1864 and served as a musician, probably a drummer.
He was captured on June 22, 1864, at the Battle of Petersburg and sent to Andersonville Prison. Unfortunately, a couple of months later he died from scorbitus. He never saw his 18th birthday.

The Andersonville records show the following.
