Vietnamese General, politician. Considered a symbol of Asian communism, he was the military leader of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Regarded by historians as a brilliant tactician and strategist, Giap commanded the Viet Minh forces who liberated Vietnam from French colonial rule, and was the commander of the PAVN of North Vietnam and South Vietnamese fought U.S. forces in the Vietnam War. After the reunification, he served as Minister of Defense Vietnam and later as Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister. He was also the author of several historical and autobiographical works.
