Jessica "Jessie" Jacobs was a young Australian actress, best known for her starring role in the ABC television series, "Saddle Club". She also appeared in a theatre version of "The Sound of Music" opposite the likes of Burt Newton and Lisa McCune.
Like the British actress, Charlotte Long, who was also a star of children's television, Jessie was killed in a tragic accident whilst still a teenager.
Jessie's death occurred when the seventeen-year-old either tripped or fell from the platform at Cheltenham Railway Station on Saturday, May 10, 2008 and fell onto the tracks. She was unable to escape in time to avoid being hit by a Melbourne-bound train.
Besides "Saddle Club", Jessie appeared in a few other Australian children's television shows, such as "Worst Best Friends", "Fergus McPhail" and "Holly's Heroes".
At the time of her death, she was taking a break from acting to focus on her music and Year 12 at Sandringham Secondary College in Victoria.
She planned to go to the Victorian College of the Arts the following year to study the electric bass as she was already in a couple of bands. These bands played at her funeral.
According to a statement released by her brother, Jessie was "very grounded and likeable, very mellow and did not let anything get to her head, despite the fact she had been in these shows and was recognised a bit."
"She's always the best person to talk to, the one I would go to to ask for advice. She was the best. She was just so happy, so charismatic."
He went on to say that while she got up to "shenanigans" like any teenager, they were few and far between and she was a good sister, an outstanding daughter and an amazing friend. "Only recently did I find out that Jess smuggled vodka into her Year Nine camp. I did that too." Recently, Jessica had been working at a local bakery where she spent more time talking to friends about "cute boys" than working.
A funeral service was held at the Holy Trinity Church in Saint Kilda, followed by a wake at Dixon Manor where Jessica had wanted to hold her 18th birthday party. More than 400 people attended. A police escort accompanied her horse-drawn hearse.
Jessie's death occurred only one day before Mother's Day, which was also her older brother's twenty-fourth birthday. She had been out on a shopping trip to buy a present for her brother when the accident occurred. She also left behind two younger brothers, aged fourteen and two.
