Florence Kathryn Hein
Florence Kathryn Hein passed away after a long illness on January 9th, 2013. She was born on September 24th, 1917 to Paul and Violenta Briese in Burke, South Dakota.
Florence was raised on a farm with 5 sisters and 2 brothers, in Burke. She had many fond memories of her childhood and loved her family very much. She always talked fondly of her brothers and sisters and parents who preceded her in death. She always had great stories of her family life that would light up her eyes when telling her family and others about her stories. She graduated from Burke High School and moved to Buffalo, New York to be with her sister Mim, and start her future. She attended Business School there. After leaving Buffalo, she moved to Chicago where she was a telephone operator for a hospital, then worked for the Wurlitzer Company. While in Chicago she met her love of her life, Willard Hein. They were married for 69 years. They were married at the Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Willard preceded her in death on May 20th, 2009. She was a devoted wife and mother. She loved her children dearly. Also her nieces and nephews, who she kept in contact with all of them until her death. They would come to visit her at her home all year long.
Willard and Florence moved from Chicago to start their life in Oregon. They operated Lou and Ev's Cafe with her family from 1946 until their retirement in 1991. The towering neon rooster of Lou and Ev's Cafe on Highway 99 North of Eugene had many faithful customers. It was a nostalgic landmark to many in Eugene. They had a passion for making people enjoy a night out in the restaurant and served some families to the fourth generation. Willard did the cooking and Florence hosted the families who came in. Some families had certain tables on certain nights and Florence always made sure they got their table. There were so many wonderful stories that she and her family remembered about the restaurant business. She could make you smile just looking at her face when families would come in to eat.
She was a 58 year member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and a sister of the Phi Beta Kappa. She also loved the Oregon Ducks, Bingo and going to their cabin at the coast.
Florence is survived by her son, Alan Hein and his wife Carol, of Eugene; her daughter, Laurie and her husband Kevin Herbig, of Florence; her two grandchildren: Jerame of Eugene and Jennifer of Portland; and her two great-grandchildren: Uriah and Flora; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Donations can be made in her name to the Greenhill Humane Society or the Salvation Army.
