Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the 76th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and was commissioned Captain of Company K. As Colonel in command, he lead the 76th Pennsylvania in engagements at Petersburg, Richmond and the campaign of the Carolinas. For duties during the assault against Fort Fisher, North Carolina, in January 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on January 15, 1865. His last service action was in the advance on Wilmington, North Carolina, February 11-22, 1865. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
