The aircraft SP4 Kim was the crew chief on was shot down while providing covering fire during an air assault mission in the Ashau Valley and burned. Three other Solders onboard were injured in the incident. One other helicopter was shot down with no loss of life, and one other sustained damage, again, with no loss of life. The incident that took SP4 Kim's life happened on 4 August 1968, but he was not pronounced dead until his body was able to be recovered on 5 August 1968.
