Barry Charles Kellenbenz was born on May 1, 1945 in Melbourne, Australia to Wallace and Esme "Faye" Kellenbenz. They, along with his brother, later moved to the United States, where Barry graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1963, and he attended the University of Wisconsin.
He was a member of the Army Reserve and served almost three years. His service number was O5352764. While in Vietnam, he served with the A Company, 3rd Battalion, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, 1st Infantry Regiment of the 23rd Division (Americal Division).
He died of injuries inflicted by the enemy during an attack on the Village of Lang Ren, Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam early on the morning of January 19, 1969. During the firefight, a Soldier became wounded outside his bunker. He valiently tried two times to rescure the man to no avail. On the third attempt he was killed.
2LT Kellenbenz's death was announced in the News Release of the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) dated 21 January 1969.
He was survived by his wife Karen A. Kellenbenz, his parents, and a brother.
