During World War II, after his ship the USS NORTHAMPTON(a heavy cruiser) was sunk by two Japanese torpedoes in the Battle of Tassafaronga on November 30, 1942, "Red" survived more than 12 hours in the water, fighting off sharks & gunfire from Japanese sailors, before he was rescued.
Although he suffered a collapsed lung in the battle, "Red" persuaded the Navy to let him serve six more years. Later, he launched a successful North Coast insuranace company that continues to thrive under the ownership of his two sons.
In 1946, he married Lavelle Robberding, after meeting her in San Francisco while on leave in the Navy.
