Smith Thompson
Birth: Jan. 17, 1768
Death: Dec. 18, 1843

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. Born in New York City, he graduated from the College of New Jersey, in 1788, taught for a short period, then studied law and opened a practice. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1810 and served as Chief Justice of the New York State Supreme Court (1814-18). He was Secretary of the Navy, when President James Monroe appointed him a Supreme Court Associate Justice on September 1, 1823. He served in office until his death at 75 and the destroyer USS Smith Thompson (DD-212) was named in his honor. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
