James L. Bates
Birth: Aug. 11, 1820
Death: Nov. 11, 1875

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, he was a merchant in the leather trade when he enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War. Commissioned a Captain of Company H, 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and he was promoted Major on August 6, 1862. After the 12th Massachusetts loss it's Colonel at the Battle of Antietam, Bates was promoted to Colonel on September 19, 1862. As commander of the 12th Massachusetts, he led his corps at the Battle of Gettysburg where he was wounded. In May and June 1864, he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, V Corps at the Battle of Spotsylvania and intercepted intelligence which ultimately helped in the success of the Overland Campaign. He was mustered out of the regular service on July 8, 1864 and for gallant and meritorious service, was brevetted Brigadier General of the Army by Congress in 1868. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)

General James L. Bates was Chairman of the Massachusetts State Police Commission 1872-73-74. The State Police is celebrating its 150th Anniversary this year 1865-2015R.I.P. General Bates
