GLENN ARNOLD GERBER

Glenn Arnold Gerber, 62, of La Grande, died Monday, Jan. 23, 1995, at his home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. tonight at Payne Family Mortuary. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. A concluding service and interment will follow at Hillcrest East Cemetery.

Mr. Gerber was born Aug. 13, 1932, in La Grande to Arnold and Mable V. (Halsey) Gerber. On Nov. 26, 1976, he married Jerry Lou (Halsey) Niederer in La Grande.

After graduating from La Grande High School in 1951, he worked for Mt. Emily Lumber Co. and retired as senior employee for Boise Cascade in 1994 due to illness. He served in the Navy as a radar man from 1952 to 1956, including during the Korean conflict. During high school and after returning from the Navy, he worked at the La Grande Theaters and Mel Plass Service Station.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, a life member of American Legion Post 43 of La Grande, where he was past commander and served as Adjutant of District 6 for 10 years, the La Grande Elks Lodge No. 433, where he served as a trustee in addition to being named Elk of the Year; La Grande Eagles Aerie No. 259; AARP, and local union 2851 LPIW.

He and his wife were a close and loving couple, and he supported her in her endeavors as she did in his. He is remembered for his kind ways and deeds, and for being helpful. He enjoyed being with his family and friends, and reading, especially history.

Survivors include his wife, of La Grande; a sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Dale McDaniel, and two nieces, Kathie Hatley and Karen Goemmel of Hillsboro.

His [step]daughter, Toni Niederer, and a sister, Margaret Gerber, died earlier.

Memorial donations may be made to the Union County Home Health Hospice, 900 Sunset Drive, La Grande 97850.
