Her father, William Gants, and her mother, Dylphia Kimes died when she was very young. Her sister, Sarah, brother, Daniel, and herself were raised by their step-father Ben Reed, until around 1860, when Charlotte married William Barker in Kansas. Her and William had two children, James Arthur Barker and Willie Barker, but the marriage didn't last.

Charlotte met and married John W. Carter about 1870 in Neosho County, Kansas. They had 4 children and eventually moved to Washington and then Oregon, where they finally settled around 1900, where Charlotte worked as a nurse.

Charlotte was living with her daughter, Bernice Purkis, at the time of her death.
