Like James Dean, he was a ladies' man, born in Borger, Texas, son of parents Zenobia Pierce and Elmer Eugene Sweaney, both direct descendants of Native American Indians.
As a child, the Sweaney family moved to Idaho, and in his early twenties, Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Stationed in California, he met Viola Myers, his first wife. After the navy, he took a job in Chicago, Illinois, where they were married in 1949. Wayne later married Kay (Shippee) Morris in 1957 and Lorraine Eaton in 1978.
He died of heart failure in 1980. Surviving, were eight children and many grandchildren.
