Four children of John and Margaret came to the Southwest part of Monroe County about the time of the close of the Revolution.

The name Harvey is Norman in origin and has been used in Great Britain since the 11th century. Harvey means "warrior of the host" and also implies "leader" or "hero".

John Harvey born c 1730, and his wife, Margaret, according to family tradition was a Burk, were living in Orange County Va in the 1750's Ref: Orange County Deed Book 3 pages 49-51 records the sale of 282 acres of land in the Parish of St. Thomas, County of Orange, Virginia to John Harvey from John and Susannah Hammack, this deed is dated 27 Sept 1753.

HARVEY Four children of John (Margaret) of Orange settled in the southwest of Monroe about the close of the Revolution. These were Benjamin, (17511826) (Susan Ballard of William)—Nicholas (Sarah )—John (Elizabeth )—Elizabeth (1768-1824) (John Stodghill). A James (MarySnidow) and a Joseph are also spoken of.

Other very early marriages among the Harveys were these: Elizabeth (Mark P. Duncan, 1803), Jacob (Hannah Swope, 1802), Joshua (Sarah Swope, 1808), Frances (James Swope, 1807), Barbara (Andrew Nickell, 1802).

Nicholas, or according to another account, James, built several log cabins at Red Sulphur Springs and was thus the first person to open the resort to the public. A daughter married William Adair. A grandson of Joseph was governor of Kansas.
