He was born in Intelligence, N.C.
They called their home "Three Oaks Farm"
Upton had 11 brothers and sisters.
On July 24th, 1912 as a 23 year old superintendent of a firm that was contracted by Norfolk & Western Railroad, he was sent to Crewe, VA. to check the commisary and boarding camp there. On that day a drunk cook he had just dismissed drew a gun and shot Wilson.
The bullet lodged in his spine and he spent the remaining 33 years of his life in bed.
He studied journalism thru an extention service of the University of North Carolina. He would type lying on his side and began to write a column called "Ragweeds and Cockleburs" for the Winston-Salem Journal.
That led to many other publications that were printed in other newspapers in the state and beyond. He became a very well-known newspaper man.
His autobiography was titled "My 33 Years of Life in Bed."
