James, age 25, married Effie Estelle McCaw, 16, in Jack Co, TX on September 30, 1886.

Effie gave birth to their son, James A., in 1889. He died in 1890

ON JUNE 23, 1900,
James D. & Effie E., ages 38 & 30, lived in Justice Precinct 5, Jack Co, TX with their children: Bessie, age 12; Roy J., 7; Lee E., 5; and Carrie A., 2. They had been married 13 years; Effie had given birth to 5 children, but only 4 were living. They were buying a farm where James worked to support the family.

ON APRIL 30, 1910,
James D. & Effie E., ages 48 & 39, lived in Justice Precinct 1, Jack Co, TX with their children: Bessie M., age 22; Roy J., 17; Eresala (Ursula) L., 15; & Clara E., 12. They had been married 23 years; Effie had given birth to 6 children, but only 4 were living. Her widowed mother, Narcissus J Mecow, age 73, lived with them. Narcissus had given birth to 3 children - all living. They were buying a farm where James worked to support them. Bessie was a public school teacher.

Federal Census
ON JANUARY 17, 1920,
James D. & Effie E., ages 58 & 49, owned a dairy farm in Justice Precinct 1, Jack Co, TX. This was most likely the one that was mortgaged earlier.

Two children were still living at home: Bessie M., 31 & Roy J., 27. Bessie was teaching in a public school; Roy was a truck driver for a pipe line company.

Effie's mother, Narcissus J. McCaw, age 83, was still living with them. She was a retired public school teacher.

Effie died at their home in Jacksboro on March 7, 1937.

By the time James died he had lived in Jacksboro, Jack Co, TX 39 years where he had retired as a ranch stock-man. Six months before his death, which occurred at 12:05 a.m. on November 7, 1943, he had broken his leg. Death came from Pneumonia & Cardiac Failure. He had lived 82 years, 4 months, & 13 days. Mrs. George Thompson of Jacksboro was the informant on his death certificate. He was buried on November 8.
