NORDYKE, Albert H., born 20 Oct 1835 in Clinton County, Ohio, probably in Green Township; member of the Society of Friends; attended Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Highland County, Ohio; received at least a basic education at local schools; enumerated with his family 15 Aug 1850 in Fairfield, Highland, Ohio; moved with his family to Richland, Keokuk, Iowa in 1854; attended Richland Monthly Meeting; worked as a farmer; married Mary Elizabeth Fitch 15 Jan 1857 in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois; enlisted in the Union Army 6 Aug 1862 at Camp Kirkwood in Clinton, Clinton, Iowa; enrolled as a private in Company I, 18th Iowa Infantry Regiment 13 Sep 1862; said to have good military character; served initially as a hospital clerk; assigned to serve as a waiter for officers Jan 1863; assigned to serve as a cook for the captain Feb/Mar 1863; appointed Assistant Regimental Wagon Master Mar 1864; appointed Regimental Wagon Master 26 Mar 1864; assigned to daily duty at the regimental headquarters 31 Aug 1864 and served in that capacity until Apr 1865, when he rejoined his regiment; fought in the Second Battle of Springfield, Prairie D'Ane, and Poison Spring; mustered out 20 Jul 1865 in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas; lived in Brighton, Washington, Iowa for two years after his service in the military; moved to St. John's, Dakota, Nebraska about 1868; returned to farming after his service in the military; described as having blue eyes, auburn hair, a fair complexion, and a height of five feet eight and a half inches; member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Nebraska Post 285; claimed that an illness sustained during his military service caused deafness, which grew worse with age until he was almost completely deaf; hit by a train and killed 14 Dec 1888 while walking on train tracks near Haigler, Dundy, Nebraska, where he was visiting his daughter (because of his deafness, he did not hear the train coming despite many warning whistles by the train's engineer); interment in Haigler Cemetery in Dundy County, Nebraska.
