Teenager drowns in Bienville pond

A 14-year old Bienville Parish teenager drowned Tuesday afternoon in a private pond where he and several friends were swimming and fishing.

Bienville Parish Sheriff Arvis Whitman said that Michael DeWayne Haynie was "seining the pond" at approximately 3pm when he apparently got in over his head.

Realizing their companion's plight Haynie's friends ran for help.

The Ringgold Police Dept. and Bienville Parish Sheriff's Office were notified and rescue efforts began.

"He was under water for about 20 minutes" before he could be rescued, the sheriff said.

Haynie was rushed to Minden Medical Center where resusitation (sic) efforts failed.

The pond where the youth drowned is located just off Hwy 7 about three miles north of Ringgold.

Funeral services for the youth will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25 in the Minden Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel.

Officiating will be Dr. Jimmy Tharpe and Rev Raymond Henson. Burial will be in the Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sibley.

Born in Bossier City, Haynie had been a lifelong resident of Webster and Bienville parishes. He was an honor student and a member of the Baptist church.

At Ringgold High School, he was a member of the Athletic Club, the track and football teams, and the weightlifting team.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Judy Chandler, Ringgold; his father, Glen D. Haynie, Minden; two grandmothers, Mrs. Mauverdyne Haynie of Minden and Mrs. Maxine Rosier of Dodson, a great grandmother, Mrs. Gussie Seegers of Minden; three sisters, Dianna Lynn Haynie of Ringgold, and Carrie Jo Haynie and Angie Terral, both of Minden; one brother, Tony Chandler, Ringgold; one aunt, Linda Edringtan, Munday, Tex; and one uncle, Jerry Hamm of Rayne.

Pallbearers will be Danny Roten, Robert Smart, Jason Kirkland, Dwayne Corley, Tommy Adams, Tony Chandler, and Kevin Cook.
