Travis John Kunz was born on November 17, 1977 in Pocatello, Idaho to Judy Mary Wells and Roger Lee Kunz. He passed away quietly and unexpectedly on March 26, 2013 in his home from complications from a surgical procedure. He lived his entire life in Pocatello except for a two year mission he served for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Indianapolis, Indiana Mission (March 1997-1999). As a young boy he attended Tendoy Elementary and Alameda Junior High. He graduated from Highland High School in 1996 and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Travis was active in sports his entire life playing little league baseball and football all the way through high school. He excelled playing baseball at Highland where he earned All-State Honors and led the team in hitting his senior year. Travis played linebacker for the 1995 undefeated state champion football team and also played American Legion Baseball during high school.
Those who played with and against Travis describe him as the ultimate teammate and competitor on and off the field – always showing respect for his coaches, teammates, competition and the boys and girls he would later coach. Travis was never critical of others but he expected you to work. He lived to serve, help and lift others throughout his entire life. Travis was an Eagle Scout.
He graduated in 2006 from Idaho State University with a Finance degree in Business Administration. He was employed by BRP Health Management Systems and worked in their accounting department. He also enjoyed umpiring softball.
In 1999 he met the love of his life and absolute best friend Shelby Suzanne Barlow. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on November 21, 2000. To this eternal union were born their team - Abbie Suzanne (9), Kannon Travis (7), Laynie Bo (2), and Madden Lee (8 months).
More than anything, Travis loved spending time with his children and sweetheart. His family was the love of his life. He adored his sweet wife, her family and her cooking. Travis loved Shelby's parents Steve and Suzanne Barlow as well as her two brothers Shaun (Emily), their children and Scotty (Amy). He spent his free time teaching, preparing and coaching his children in both life and in their soccer, baseball, softball and football events. He loved the outdoors and open spaces and always looked forward to hunting with his father and cousins. Travis also loved to play golf.
He was an Assistant Football Coach at Century High School for the past six years helping coach the defense. Travis was ‘old school' and he delighted in seeing athletes excel in any sport through grit and determination. He knew that hard work, effort and dedication determine our success and that was how he lived.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as an Elders Quorum President, teacher, Ward Executive Secretary, home teacher and Ward Finance Clerk at the time of his death. Travis loved the gospel and had a testimony of eternal families. He loved his Heavenly Father and truly enjoyed serving others.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shelby and their four young children: Abbie, Kannon, Laynie Bo, and Madden; parents, Roger and Judy; sisters, Tamera Dawn (Greg) Harding and Tawna Lyn (Troy) Eborn; brother, R. Troy (Emily) Kunz; and fourteen nieces and nephews who absolutely adore him. He is preceded in death by, his Grandparents George S. & Edyth B. Kunz and John A. & Edith H. Wells.
