Frederick Robert Heerd

Birth: Dec. 13, 1913
Death: Feb. 28, 1985

Frederick enlisted with the USA Auxilliary Military Police for the Army on 10 July 1943. He enlisted at the rank of a Tech. Sargent and was a Corporal with the qualification of a Carbine Sharpshooter. On 24 February 1945 he was wounded in Germany. On 29 May 1945 he arrived home receiving the Purple Heart award. Other awards received during his service were Certificate of Meritorious Conduct, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, Bronze Battle Stars, and Silver Stars.

Fred R. Heerd, 71, 221 W. Fulliam Ave., died Thursday night at Muscatine General Hospital.
Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel. The Rev. Paul Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral chapel Friday from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday until time of service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established at the chapel.
Mr. Heerd was born Dec. 12, 1913 at Muscatine, a son of Robert and Lillian Klett Heerd. He was a life resident here. He married Lois Bowser, March 19, 1939 at Fort Madison. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 304 for 25 years, a retiree of Grain Processing Corporation and was a locksmith and gunsmith here for 25 years. He was also a longtime umpire and referee in Muscatine and the surrounding area.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Fred Heerd Jr., Tehachapi, CA., three daughters; Mrs. Laurel Owens, Sturgis, Minn., Mrs. John (Mary) Lister, Fremont, Wis.; Mrs. Dennis (Ellen) McGuire, Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Glenroy (Violet) Ryan, Tucson, Sriz., six grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Bowser, 221 West Fulliam avenue, today announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Lois Bowser, to Fred Heerd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heerd, 116 West Eighth street. The single ring ceremony was performed at 2 p.m. on March 19 at the parsonage of the First Christian church at Fort Madison with the Rec. E. L. Frost, pastor, officiating. The couple was attended by Miss Iris Slatler and Sam Farrar, both of Muscatine.
Mrs. Heerd is a graduate of Muscatine high school and of Iowa Wesleyan college at Mr. Pleasant. She has been an instructor in the third grade of Jefferson school for the past several years.
Mr. Heerd, also a graduate of Muscatine high school, holds the position of assistant manager of the Western Auto Associate store in Aledo, Ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Heerd will be at home to friends at Aledo in June after Mrs. Heerd completes her school duties.
