James Artis Burnett, 78, of Old Alabam, died February 5, 2000 at the Washington Regional Medical Center. He was born April 7, 1921 at Huntsville, the son of James Sherman "Jim" and Lovie Pharris Burnett. He has served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a veteran of World War Two, serving in the United States Army Air Force. He was a longtime trapper, woodworker and collector of coins, antiques and arrowheads and was a dealer in furs, ginseng and real estate. Art or Poky, as he was known to many, loved to play the fiddle, mandolin, banjo and piano. He was preceded in death by his father in 1972, his mother in 1928, two brothers, Wayne Burnett and Franklin Burnett and by two sisters, Nadine Burnett and Erma Jean Owens.

Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Gertie Bryant Burnett of the home; two sons, Marion Lee Smith of Alabam and James Edward Burnett of Old Alabam; two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Eubanks of Fayetteville and Mrs. Sandra Smith of Huntsville; five brothers, Paul Burnett of Springdale, Karl Burnett of Pueblo, Colorado, Norris Burnett of Pinnacle, Norman Burnett and Kent Burnett, both of Fayetteville; one sister, Mrs. Geraldine Gooch of Oktaha, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, in the chapel of Brashears Funeral Home with Rev. Porter Bryant and Rev. Layton Porter officiating. Interment will be in the Alabam Cemetery under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Darell Smith, Dwayne Smith, Tracy Smith, Lance Eubanks, Steve Burnett and Lance Yarborough. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Burnett, Keith Phillips and Jeff Perry.
