Helen (Troy) Payton was born July 26, 1909, in Van Buren Co., AR (now Cleburne Co.) in the small town of Miller, named for her Great-grandfather, Christian Miller. (The town of Miller is now at the bottom of Greers Ferry Lake).
Her father was Adolphus Newton "Newt" Troy, b. April 6, 1882, d. 1963 and her mother was Kittie Miller, b. July 31, 1880, d. Oct 23, 1929. She had two brothers; Jewel Adolphus (1904-1969) and Ernest (1907-1984) and one sister, Lucy May (1913-1990)
She was married to Oather Virgil Payton and had three children, 2 still living, and Nicklous Payton of Longview, WA b. 1939 d. 1994. She was a member of the Pangburn church of Christ. Helen Payton is buried in Center Chapel in Tyler, AR, Cleburne Co. She was a teacher at the Valley Special School.
My grandmother was resourceful, practical, creative, and loving, and had a subtle but wonderful sense of humor. She loved nature and animals and spoiling us grandkids, and I can still remember the sparkle she got in her eyes when she smiled. One thing I will never forget is her telling me when she was young, other kids used to call her "Helen of Troy". She didn't like it - not because it was cruel, but because she was very self-conscious and shy.
She is dearly missed, but someday we'll meet again.
