Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He had served in the Army during the Mexican War and at the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed Captain of Company K, 91st Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry in September 1861. Promoted Regimental Major, he later served as Lieutenant Colonel, 91st Regiment Indiana Infantry. As Colonel of the 3rd Brigade, 23rd Army Corps, he was in the Franklin Campaign and Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, in late 1864. His last service action was with Major General William T. Sherman, in the Campaign for the Carolinas, as commander of the 2nd Brigade in early 1865. For meritorious war service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and mustered out of the Union Army at Salisbury, North Carolina on June 26, 1865.
