Dad was a farm boy from Cottonwood, Idaho. He was born to Howard Roland McKinley and Elsie May Wortman on the family ranch just outside of Cottonwood, Idaho. He was the youngest child and only boy, and as such, was happpily spoiled. His sister Vivienne was 17 years older and his sister Neal was 16 years older. They both adored him. He was a good student, played on the starting team in basketball and of course played in the band. He went into education starting out as a band and history teacher and moved into administration from principal to superintendent to serve as Chief Deputy Superintendent of Schools for the State of California for eleven years. From there he took his education experience into the new world of computers, traveling the county for various companies. He loved basketball, golf, a good John Phillips Sousa march, Mozart, The Modern Jazz Quartet and great California wine! His "Booze, Beans and Beef Barbeques" were legendary for his wine, navy beans and excellent steak. He took his band to the Rose Parade and the brand new Disneyland in the 50's. He was part of one of the earliest groups (education) to visit China in the 70's after Nixon's detente. He was of the generation that went from horses to a man on the moon. He served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War retiring as a lieutenant. He met our Mom at the University of Idaho. They married in Caldwell in 1948. After Mom retired they traveled the world, always first class. He took pride in being able to take her places. Mom was next to his bedside when he died from kidney cancer. She took good care of him all during his final illness. After his death, we gathered with good friends and his beloved sister, Neal, on the Camas Prairie near Cottonwood, Idaho to scatter most of his ashes on the family farm. A small vial of ashes was saved and placed with Mom's. Together forever.
We miss you Dad.
Love, your three kids
