On May 20, 1864, he mustered into Company I of the 60th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Camp Chase in Ohio. He was a Corporal and listed as a harness maker.
He was discharged at Columbus, Ohio on May 30, 1865.

1st wife Lucinda M. Gish Ayers - no children

2nd wife Margaret J. Gamble Price Ayers - one known child at this time named Robert Ayers

3rd wife Mary Jane Chivington Ayers - children were Lilla (Lillian) L. "Lilly" Ayers, Jenna L. "Jennie" Ayers, Francis A. Ayers, James Monroe Ayers and Rosa May Ayers.

4th wife Hannah Elizabeth Mitchell Ayers - children were Estella "Stell" M. Ayers, Thomas "Tom" David Ayers, Elinor Elisabeth "Bessie" Ayers and Rall M. Ayers.
