Israel Soloff was the son of Meyer and Esther Soloff. He had two brothers, Solomon and David, and a sister. He married Dorothy Serels.

According to enlistment records, Israel Soloff enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Ft Jay Governors Island in NY on 22 Jul 1941. He was assigned to the 376th Bomb Group 512th Bomb Squadron while serving in Africa. Lt Soloff was a bombardier on a B-24D (# 41-23724)which participated in the 1 Aug 1943 bombing of the Romanian oil fields known as "Operation Tidal Wave". It was the first low level bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania.
