Began his military service overseas with the 120th Machine Gun Battalion. Served as regimental chaplain for the 125th Infantry Regiment in France during WWI. Attached to 3rd Corps HQ as corps burial officer but returned to the 125th Infantry Regiment on the day of his death to present the regimental commander with a national flag in anticipation of the cessation of hostilities. Roman Catholic priest. Reportedly the youngest chaplain in the AEF and the last officer KIA before the Armistice was signed.
