O'Brien Family The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed an estimated 43, 000 United States Servicemen in World War I. Thomas and Della O'Brien lost two sons during the years. Son Thomas, a four-year Detroit policeman, entered the military and in less than one week died at Camp Custer. Seven months later, son James died at Fort Benjamin in Harrison, Indiana. Another brother John, stationed with Gen. John J. Pershing in France survived the epidemic. The family is buried in section D.
