Death Takes One
Of Old Veterans
Of The Civil War
W.G. Dunn, Resident of
City for 50 Years, Dies,
Aged 80
Death on Sunday removed one of the older residents of Monroe in the passing of W. G. Dunn, 80 years of age, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. B. Parker, at 110 Ouachita Avenue. Mr. Dunn was for a full half century a resident of Monroe and had been living a most active life through all the years until infirmities of advanced years forced him to retire.
Mr. Dunn was a native of Cuthbert, GA, where he was born January 24, 1845. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted with the Cuthbert Rifles, Company F, 5th Georgia Regiment. He saw many active engagements in the war, one of which was the Battle Of Chickamauga.
After the war, Mr. Dunn removed to Monroe and for last fifty years has been a resident here, having managed several of the large plantations along the river for their owners, being specially capable as plantation manager.
He was honors by election to serve the Sixth, Fourth, and Third wards on the police jury and was for some time a member of the Ouachita Parish school board.
In fraternal circles, Mr. Dunn was also an active member, being affiliated for years with the Masonic lodge of Monroe. He was a man of sterling qualities and respected by all of the large circle of friends that he made in his long residence in this city and vicinity.
Surviving are two sons who are: C. S. Dunn, of West Monroe; O. G. Dunn, of Girard. Also three daughters as follows: Mrs. A. L. Bertrand of Fort Thomas, KY; Mrs. E. H. Hill, and Mrs. J. B. Parker, both of this city.
The funeral will be conducted by the local Masonic lodge at the home of J. B. Parker, 110 Ouachita Avenue, where short services will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. today. Burial will be made at 5 p.m. in the Old City Cemetery.
